Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

Waterfalls in Arizona?

In the State where so many people think we are out of water? Yes! Looking for a day trip? Want to see a piece of history? Want to see some amazing scenery? You have to check out Tonto Natural Bridge State Park just outside of Payson, AZ.

Camping & Day Trip

My family lives in Phoenix and we had heard about a special opportunity to camp overnight at TNBSP so we jumped on the opportunity. Knowing it is only a short and easy 1.5 hour drive, and an opportunity to camp we were all in. Keep in mind, camping is usually not allowed so that is completely separate. But if you are looking for a place to do a fairly easy half day hike, see some beautiful scenery, get a glimpse of javelina and deer (more on that later) this could be the trip for you. And if you are from Phoenix, like we are, enjoy a ride back through Payson where you can stop off for a quick meal, or grab some ice cream!

As part of our camping excursion I even got to try archery for the first time. It was fun but let’s just say I won’t be leaving my real estate career any time soon.

Wildlife

Whenever we camp we expect to see wildlife but Tonto was on another level! As you can see in the pictures we saw javelina (a bunch of them), some deer, a huge tarantula, and some other animals I can’t even pronounce. Because there is still an apple orchard shortly after entering the park, it is common to see the javelina and deer co-mingle together…and unlike the in-town javelina these were/are super friendly (but we still kept our distance). Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of the tarantula. But let’s just say we hope we don’t see him again.

Waterfalls

While we began our hike, it started to rain so we were extremely fortunate to see even more waterfalls than normal, and they were/are stunning. As we got closer to the Bridge, there were several waterfalls and it really made us stop, and take everything in. To think only 1.5 hours is away “scorching desert” yet here is a natural bridge with waterfall–wow. The Park has multiple trails. Some are steep, and harder to maneuver around (rock formations) but they are all what I would put on the “easy” level. I guess they could be classified as moderate to a degree. But they are well worth it!

Payson, Arizona and more about Tonto

If you are not familiar with or have been to Payson, I suggest you check it out. It’s got a small town foresty feel to it and does not have the hustle and bustle that Big City Phoenix has.

Again, we drove from Phoenix. It is a simple ride past Fountain Hills, north on the Beeline Highway, up through Payson, and into Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. Our camping trip included park passes but I think they are super affordable. There is a super cute house/gift shop that has some rich history about TNBSP and you might even be able to watch the butterflies if you hang out on the patio.

Should You Visit Payson Or Tonto Natural Bridge State Park?

After having lived in the Valley for almost 30 years and never really knowing about this, I am so glad we went to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. The scenery, animals, beauty and a chance to “escape” cell service for a day was awesome. If you get a chance, I would suggest you take it. If you are just curious about the Valley and want some different Area Guides I put together, make sure to visit this part of my website.

And after you do (or if you have already) drop me a note with what you think. I can’t wait to hear from you.
